Whiplash and Glee star Melissa Benoist lands role of Supergirl in CBS series

Melissa Benoist has been officially been cast as the title character in CBS' new Supergirl series. The 26-year-old actress can currently be seen as Miles Teller’s love interest in the critically acclaimed WHIPLASH. Some astute readers with questionable taste in TV may recognize her from a role on Glee that she had for two seasons. That would make her the second Glee cast member, after The Flash’s Grant Gustin, to move on to become a DC superhero.

Here is the official description for Supergirl:

“Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”

The series will be executive produced The Flash and Arrow’s Greg Berlanti which of course brings to many minds the idea that Supergirl could crossover with The Flash and Arrow at some point. CBS owns the CW but the answer is still unclear even though Berlanti indicated that he certainly would like to see it. Next up I hope we get to see an image of Benoist as a blond; not that there's anything wrong with her current style.

What do you think of the casting?

Clark Kent's hair is dark brown or black. I'm still not sure why his cousin is blonde in almost all of her visual incarnation. What I'm saying is, Benoist is perfectly fine as Supergirl as it is.

... What a weird opinion to have. Do you share the same hair color as all of your cousins? I sure as hell don't.

It makes sense.

During her 1st season on GLEE, other characters constantly talked about how beautiful and sweet-looking she was. And her acting in it was very good... until she stopped having good (or any) storylines. I haven't seen WHIPLASH, so I'll trust The_Soloist on that.

I'm still hoping that they're opting to make her the Clark Kent of this world. With two different Flash's we know the tv world will never be part of the cinematic universe - I'm fine with that. We've got Arrow (Batman), I was going to say Flash is the Superman of this world...but now we could have a Supergirl if she's bought in to the same universe...making Flash the Flash of this world :o) Hopefully the viewing audience will be able to deal with two live action DC universes in motion

I'm more than happy with such an arrangement.

Great casting choice. Seems to fit the part nicely. Hopefully they cross this over to Arrow/Flash universe as well.

I like it. She was good in Whiplash and is very attractive. Hope the show is as good as Arrow, and The Flash.

But while I'm watching it, I'll be thinking where the hell Superman is.
