Captain Marvel: Kevin Feige sheds light on movie’s style & Nick Fury’s role

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

We still have two more Marvel movies on the docket for 2018 – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and ANT-MAN AND THE WASP – but already fans are dying to see what CAPTAIN MARVEL has in store when it arrives in 2019. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige shared some more details on the movie, including how Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) factors into the adventure, and how the setting has influenced the style of the movie.

While talking about the future of Marvel with EW, Feige shared a considerable amount of detail about the setting of MARVEL, in particular, talking about how the movie will find Fury discovering his first super-powered individual (Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson), setting him on his path to forming the Avengers.

We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony [Stark], “You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.” Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within CAPTAIN MARVEL

The movie will be set in the 90s, about a decade-plus before the events of IRON MAN, and Feige spoke more about the kinds of movies that influenced MARVEL. The movie may not take from the plot devices of any of those films, but they're certainly looking for inspiration in numerous action elements.

Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements TERMINATOR 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.

In some ways, I'm looking forward to MARVEL more than AVENGERS and ANT-MAN, simply because I don't know what to expect. Going back to the 90s to reveal that Danvers has existed as a hero in this world years before the events of IRON MAN, but hasn't really shown herself to the world, opens up some exciting possibilities for this universe that will surely affect how things play out in AVENGERS 4 and onward. Plus, when you compare your movie to TERMINATOR 2 you can just take my money now.

CAPTAIN MARVEL arrives exactly one year from yesterday on March 8, 2019.
