A Magnum P.I. sequel is in the works for some reason

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

First there was the troubled MACGUYVER reboot coming to CBS, now Deadline is reporting that a new MAGNUM P.I. series in the works at ABC. Hell, with LETHAL WEAPON also getting a TV-show reboot on FOX, it seems like the 80's won't ever go away (like the wage gap).

Anyway, this is the synopsis for the new show (simply titled MAGNUM):

Magnum’s daughter, Lily “Tommy” Magnum, returns to Hawaii to take up the mantle of her father’s PI firm. She and her tribe of friends mix tropical beaches with the seedy underbelly of international crime and modern espionage, even as she tries to unravel the mystery of the blown spy operation that ended her career in Navy Intelligence.

I mean, the one thing that intrigues me is that it's going to be his daughter going on adventures and not his son or some shit. You can't replace the hairy charisma of Selleck, so it's smart to not even try. And it's always nice to see more cool, female heroes.

But that's where my curiosity ends. I'm not against remakes – or sequels – outright, but MAGNUM P.I. seemed to be mostly of its time, and I don't know what it really offers today. At least MACGUYVER has the cool twist where he refuses to use guns, and uses his wits and stuff around him instead. I'm not sure MAGNUM has a twist like that. Though, to be fair, I wasn't even born when it was on the air, so there's no nostalgia factor for me like there might be for others.

So what do you guys think? And who do you think would make a good female Tom Selleck?
