I think we all saw this coming, but that doesn't make such a grim reality sting any less.
A new report hailing from Deadline suggests that Denis Villeneuve's DUNE is being pushed from its December 18 release date to October 1, 2021. That's … I mean, wow. Previously, DUNE was scheduled to square off against Diana Prince in WONDER WOMAN 1984, which is currently scheduled for a Christmas Day release this year. Personally, I thought Warners had lost their minds when looking to release both films so close to one another, and now it sounds as if they too have seen the error of that ill-conceived plan.
News of DUNE being moved to almost a year from now comes not long after Cineworld confirmed that all 536 Regal Theaters in the U.S. and all 127 Cineworld/Picturehouse theaters in the U.K. will temporarily close beginning Thursday, October 8. This is obviously a major blow to the film industry as a whole, and a move that we might not see the full consequences of for quite some time.
DUNE tells the story of Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
The film stars a who's who of the Hollywood elite including Timothée Chalamet (THE KING) as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson (DOCTOR SLEEP) as Lady Jessica, and Oscar Isaac (STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER) as Duke Leto Atreides. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgard (THOR) as the villainous Baron Harkonnen, Dave Bautista (BLADE RUNNER 2049) as his sadistic nephew, Glossu "Beast" Rabban, Charlotte Rampling (RED SPARROW) as the Reverend Mother Mohiam, the emperor's truthsayer, Josh Brolin (AVENGERS: ENDGAME) as Gurney Halleck, a troubadour-swordsman, Javier Bardem (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES) as Stilgar, the leader of the Fremen, Jason Momoa (AQUAMAN) as Duncan Idaho, a swordmaster in the house of Atreides, Zendaya (SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME) as Chani, a Fremen who becomes a love interest to Paul Atreides, and David Dastmalchian (ANT-MAN AND THE WASP) as Piter De Vries, a twisted Mentat.
