This is the kind of summer that Vin Diesel and Nicole Kidman were preaching about in their AMC promos as audiences had flocked back to theaters now more than ever since the pandemic. Not only has the box office season of summer 2026 become the best since the bleak reality of COVID’s effect on the industry, but Variety is reporting that the domestic ticket sales from May 1 through Labor Day on September 7 have become the all-time highest-grossing with $4.76 billion.
The former record went to the summer of 2013, which grossed $4.755 billion at the box office with movies like Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Fast & Furious 6, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University and Star Trek Into Darkness.
However, two major caveats have also contributed to this feat — the total for ticket sales from over a decade ago had not been adjusted for inflation and the summer movie season now lasts a bit longer than before, as it ran 130 days compared to 123 days in 2013. This is reportedly because of Labor Day’s placement on the calendar. The premium theater experience has also now become more lucrative since then, with IMAX, Screen X, Dolby and 4DX theaters increasing options for viewing.
Money Making Movies
This year saw big crowd-pleasing films that feature multiple that have crossed the billion dollar mark, including Toy Story 5, The Odyssey and of course, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Add to that the success stories of smaller films like Obsession and Backrooms, which may have influenced the immediate future of the industry.
Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends Paul Dergarabedian, has stated, “While the summer box office record marks an important turning point for movie theaters, the numbers are only part of the story. What makes this summer uniquely important and potentially pivotal is that, for many people, it may have been the season that reminded them just how much fun it is to go to the movies. That can inspire future moviegoing, create a new generation of theatergoers and, with so many great films still ahead, keep that momentum going.”
