Buckle your seatbelts, folks, because Netflix is partnering with Sega for a live-action adaptation of its iconic Crazy Taxi video game franchise. The project hails from screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the duo behind 2025’s The Naked Gun.
The Dreamcast Classic That Fueled a Generation
Debuting in arcades in 1999 before becoming a massive system-seller for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, Crazy Taxi remains one of Sega’s most iconic and high-octane arcade franchises. Created by Kenji Kanno and developed by Sega’s Hitmaker studio, you play as different cabbies, racing around the clock to pick up fares and earn extra cash by making the trip as unhinged as possible.
To progress through the game, players perform “crazy stunts” to increase their scores and overall ratings. It’s a skill-based racer that demands quick reflexes and map memorization to pull off unhinged stunts, all powered by a high-energy soundtrack featuring bands like The Offspring and Bad Religion.
More Sega Favorites Joining the Netflix Queue
In addition to the Crazy Taxi adaptation, Netflix is joining forces with Sega to develop a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series, as well as a live-action film based on the upcoming video game Stranger Than Heaven.
“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up. With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven, we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences,” Brandon Riegg, VP of nonfiction and transmedia at Netflix, said in a statement.
Axel’s Next Shift Starts in 2027
In 2027, Sega will bring Crazy Taxi back to fans with Crazy Taxi: World Tour, a new game in the beloved franchise for the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The new game follows fan-favorite cabbie Axel as he chases down international car thieves across five global cities to recover his stolen taxi. Classic drivers Gena, B.D. Joe and Gus return alongside new characters.
