Now that Resident Evil has been released in theaters, Zach Cregger is turning his full attention to his next project, a sci-fi thriller titled The Flood. We still don’t know all that much about the film, but the director recently dropped a few new details, including that Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is an influence.

Zach Cregger on The Flood

It’s no secret that Cregger is very passionate about The Flood, even once saying he’d burn his house down if that’s what it took to make it. In a recent interview with Men’s Health, it’s clear he’s lost none of that enthusiasm.

I just love the story, dude,” Cregger said. “That movie is about something in a real way that’s important to me. It’s another bizarre narrative structure in the way that Weapons and Barbarian are, but it’s not jumping perspectives. It unfolds in a very unique way that I’m really proud of. It’s disturbing, but it’s not a horror movie, although there are horror scenes in it. It feels intimidating to me. I’m still not really sure how to make it, but I think that’s a good thing. It’s hard to talk about it without talking about the story. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to make that movie. I’m in love with that story in a really unique way.

Cregger pointed to 2001: A Space Odyssey as an influence on The Flood, but made sure to note that he’s certainly not comparing the two projects.

I’m not comparing it to 2001, because I think 2001 is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word, but there’s a bizarreness to that movie that’s really undeniable, and it’s also a horror movie,” he said. “I think 2001 is a really thrilling horror movie about human nature, and obviously about artificial intelligence, but it asks big questions. And I think, in that way, there’s some similarity with Flood.

Very curious about this one.

What We Thought of Resident Evil

As for Resident Evil, the film is off to a great start at the box office and is earning rave reviews. In fact, our own Chris Bumbray said it’s “among the most exciting films in recent memory, with Cregger packing in enough action and gore for multiple movies in his ultra-lean ninety-five-minute running time.” You can check out the rest of his review right here, and be sure to let us know what you thought of the film as well!
