Bird Box: Spanish-language spin-off in the works at Netflix

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Netflix's 2018 hit Bird Box was based on a novel by Josh Malerman (pick up a copy HERE), who has since written a sequel novel titled Malorie (buy that one HERE). While we wait to see whether or not Malorie is ever going to receive a film adaptation, Netflix is moving forward with a plan to start making Bird Box spin-offs in various locations around the globe. First up is a Spanish language spin-off, which is set to be written and directed by Alex and David Pastor.

The Pastors' previous credits include The Occupant, Carriers, the Syfy show Incorporated, and the HBO Max series The Head

Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls will be producing the film for Nostromo Pictures, and Bird Box producers Dylan Clark and Chris Morgan are also on board. Bird Box director Susanne Bier will serve as executive producer alongside Ainsley Davies of Chris Morgan Productions and Brian Williams of Dylan Clark Productions.

The Pastors' contribution to the Bird Box franchise is intended to have a "distinctly Spanish flavor", and will be filmed in Spain sometime toward the end of the year.

Bird Box starred Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson, Trevante Rhodes, Jacki Weaver, Danielle Macdonald, Rosa Salazar, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Colson Baker, and B.D. Wong. Scripted by Eric Heisserer, the film followed

a mother and her two young children, who are among a small group of survivors after a mysterious alien force has driven the world's population to deadly violence. The three must make their way on a terrifying journey — 20 miles in a rowboat — while blindfolded, with nothing to rely on but the mother's wits and the children's trained ears.

Since Bird Box presented the idea of a global apocalypse, it makes sense that a global streaming service like Netflix would want to show what happened when that apocalyptic event hit places all around the world. It's a clever way to make a franchise even without direct sequels.
