Black Canary movie in development for HBO Max

Black Canary movie Birds of Prey Jurnee Smollett

Update: It has been confirmed by Deadline that a Black Canary movie is preparing to take flight at HBO Max. The newly-announced project will see Jurnee Smollett reprising her role as Black Canary, with Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green writing the script. Sue Kroll will produce via her Kroll & Co. Entertainment studio. The film will serve as a spinoff of 2020’s Birds of Prey.

After first being introduced in Birds of Prey, it seems that Black Canary may get to sing once again. As reported by Cinelinx (and backed up by Collider), a Black Canary movie is in early development for HBO Max that will be written by Misha Green.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell is expected to reprise her role of Dinah Lance/Black Canary, who is a vigilante with the metahuman ability of hypersonic screams. Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett-Bell previously worked together on WGN’s Underground and HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and had expressed an interest in reuniting for a Black Canary project. “It’s no secret how much I love Black Canary. It’s a dream, character and was a dream to play her,” Smollett-Bell told Variety last year. “If [the] dynamics fell in the right way, I would absolutely do it in a heartbeat, and Lord knows, I follow Misha wherever she leads me.” At the moment it seems that Misha Green would just pen the script, but she could direct the Black Canary movie as well, especially as she’s set to get some big-screen experience with Tomb Raider 2.

In addition to the potential Black Canary movie, Warner Bros. has several DC projects in the works for HBO Max, including Batgirl and Blue Beetle as well as a Black Superman series being developed by Michael B. Jordan.
