There have been a lot of movies getting the small screen treatment in recent months. Everything from MINORITY REPORT, EVIL DEAD, RESIDENT EVIL, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, AMERICAN GIGOLO, SCHOOL OF ROCK, SHOOTER, and more. Whether these shows all come to fruition or not, the odds are they will not all be as good as HANNIBAL, BATES MOTEL, or FARGO. But, if there is one series adaptation I want to work more than any of them, it is GALAXY QUEST.
Dean Parisot‘s 1999 comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Justin Long, and Sam Rockwell was a moderate success at the box office that has gone on to a huge following since being released on DVD. The blend of spoof and homage to STAR TREK and STAR WARS has garnered the movie a dedicated fan-base that has clamored for a sequel. Now, they may get their way in the form a television series.
The GALAXY QUEST series will be written by the movie’s writer, Robert Gordon, with director Dean Parisot producing. There is no word on whether it will be a reboot of the film or a continuation, but it will likely focus on the cast of a scifi series who are thought to be real by a group of aliens looking for heroes. Think THE THREE AMIGOS in outer space. There is currently no network linked to the project, but I would expect this to be an easy sell to a network like SyFy or Comedy Central if one of the networks doesn’t nab it first.
GALAXY QUEST is a very fun movie that deserves to be seen by more people. While the series will not be a true continuation without the same cast involved, here’s hoping they can somehow get at least Tim Allen back in the lead.
