Joe Wright’s Cyrano is finally getting its U.S theatrical release this week after endless delays caused by the Omicron variant. A thrilling musical updating of Cyrano de Bergerac, the film is anchored by a tremendous lead performance by Peter Dinklage, who was tipped as Oscar-worthy but was eventually shut out – for no good reason in my mind. The film also boasts perhaps career-best work from the delightful Haley Bennett, who plays the object of his affection, Roxanne. Bennett has a tremendous voice (let’s not forget her breakout role was as a pop star in Music & Lyrics) and sings the hell out of the song-score by The National.
Our review of Cyrano is set to run later this week, but it’s a tremendous piece of work that deserves even more accolades than it’s getting. I would love to see this become a breakout hit, as director Joe Wright has done a brilliant job reimagining the tale. It also has a ton of swashbuckling action, which the ads haven’t really played up. It works on a lot of levels, so please check it out!
