Exclusive – Dane DeHaan, Maika Monroe and More Talk The Stranger!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The first time I'd heard anything regarding Quibi, I was skeptical about how effective a movie split into eight-minute sections could be. Since then, I've had the pleasure of exploring more. And I've found that this format works far better than anticipated. A terrific example of that is the new thriller THE STRANGER – which is currently streaming on Quibi – written and directed by Veena Sud, and stars Dane DeHaan and Maika Monroe. The thirteen-episode series creates several intense and nerve-rattling sequences, all held together with the smart casting of both the film's leads.

Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Sud, DeHaan, Monroe, and co-star Avan Jogia. First up, we spoke with both Veena and Avan. The filmmaker opened up about the influences behind THE STRANGER. Not only will you find a bit of THE HITCHER here, but she gave mention to Brian Cox, and his brilliant portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lector in Michael Mann's MANHUNTER. For Avan, it was exciting to see the very talented young actor deconstruct the stereotypical corner marker employee. The actor brings warmth and humor to his work, and he's terrific as a guy just trying to help someone in need.

A big reason that I was curious about THE STRANGER is simply that I'm a fan of both DeHaan and Monroe. Dane is one of the kindest guys you could ever meet, and he opened up about playing a not so nice guy. As for Maika, the actress discussed her appreciation for the genre, and why this part appealed to her. Considering the inclusion of modern technology that is used in the new feature, the two opened up about their relationship with social media, and how much it influences them. One thing I appreciated is how they both felt it helped stay connected to the fans that support their work. If you are looking for something cool and creepy, a good time that will have your pulse pounding, make sure you seek out THE STRANGER on Quib…i before that stranger finds you.
