Game of Thrones featurette focuses on special effects

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

To say that I’m excited about the seventh season of GAME OF THRONES is like saying Tyrion is excited about wine and snarky comments. Anyway, the new season is almost upon us, and HBO has been releasing behind-the-scenes featurettes to help whet our appetites (as if our appetites need more whetting). This one focuses on special effects, which is probably the most important thing in the show – the blood, nudity, and dragons.

So let’s take a look, shall we?

Man, it must’ve been cool to have a dad work on MONTY PYTHON and Terry Gilliam films! And what I liked about this featurette, is that it shows that practical effects are not a lost, dead art (even if their influence is waning). I’ve gone on record as a proponent in CGI, and I stand by that. However, I also have talked about the over-burdening of VFX houses and the rushed schedules/harsh conditions of VFX artists to meet the ever-expanding demand of CG, so it’s good to see that there are still people who explode things for a living, to lift the weight off their shoulders. Either way, I’m excited for next season!

Meanwhile, winter will finally come to the Seven Kingdoms July 16th.
