Dario Argento praises Get Out & Hereditary, slams Suspiria remake again

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Director Luca Guadagnino's remake of Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA will be hitting Amazon Prime Video this May. I for one loved the remake and found it to be a great piece of filmmaking. But as we already let you guys know a few months back, Argento himself doesn't seem to agree, saying:

It did not excite me, it betrayed the spirit of the original film: there is no fear, there is no music. The film has not satisfied me so much.

And it looks like Argento is out and about talking smack about the remake yet again, this time saying:

To me, the remake of Suspiria doesn’t look like a well-realized project. It lacks fear, music, tension, and scenic creativity.

But he did then go on to say some nice things about Jordan Peele's GET OUT and Ari Aster's HEREDITARY, saying:

Films like Get Out and Hereditary have struck me for their beautiful photography, their plot, and their production.

While I whole-heartedly agree with the master of horror's take on both GET OUT and HEREDITARY, I think it kind of goes without saying that I don't agree with Argento on the SUSPIRIA remake. But, all the same, it's his film so he can feel any way he likes when someone remakes it.

The remake follows:

Young American dancer Susie Bannion arrives in 1970s Berlin to audition for the world-renowned Helena Markos Dance Co. When she vaults to the role of lead dancer, the woman she replaces breaks down and accuses the company's female directors of witchcraft. Meanwhile, an inquisitive psychotherapist and a member of the troupe uncover dark and sinister secrets as they probe the depths of the studio's hidden underground chambers.

The remake was directed by Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) from a screenplay written by David Kajganich (THE INVASION) based on the original film written by Dario Argento (DEEP RED) and Daria Nicolodi. This new version was produced by Guadagnino, Kajganich, Marco Morabito, Brad Fischer, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Francesco Melzi d'Eril, William Sherak, and Gabriele Moratti. Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Jessica Harper, and Chloë Grace Moretz star. Radiohead's Thom Yorke provided the music. SUSPIRIA conjures itself onto Amazon Prime Video on May 3rd.
