Is Zombieland 2 still alive with Ruben Fleischer on board?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Here’s a small kernel of hope for those of you still aching for a ZOMBIELAND sequel. Buried toward the end of a Variety article about director Ruben Fleischer signing an overall deal with Universal Television is the following:

His upcoming film projects include directing “Spy Hunter” for producer Dan Lin and Warner Bros.; directing and producing “Zombieland 2″ at Sony; and directing and producing an untitled sci-fi project at Sony.

For the last few years, everything has pointed toward a ZOMBIELAND 2 being dead and buried. You have all the commitments for its cast to think about (none of them had much heat when ZOMBIELAND was first released), plus the total failure of the “Zombieland” Amazon series to consider. But this small item in the Variety article may just indicate the project isn’t ready to die just yet.

For what it’s worth, Fleischer seemed excited to tackle ZOMBIELAND 2 last year, and had this to say about the premise:

Needless to say it was a continuation of the original story with the same characters. I guess the only thing I could really say is that the threat to our heroes wasn’t only zombies, like they encounter other people that they’re all jockeying for positions.”

Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if this pans out – and even if ZOMBIELAND 2 does get on its feet, it’s still unlikely we’ll get to see it anytime soon.
