Luca Guadagnino talks Helena Markos Suspiria prequel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA will finally hit theaters via Amazon Studios November 2nd. We've already heard word that the new film's director toyed with the idea of calling the movie SUSPIRIA: PART ONE – in my eyes confirming that there will someday be a SUSPIRIA PART TWO – and today we have word that the next SUSPIRIA film might be a prequel instead of a sequel.

Guadagnino recently spoke with The Playlist and said that he has a flash of an idea for a potential prequel. One that would follow head witch herself, Helena Markos living in solitude back in Scotland/Spain in 1212. It sounds interesting for sure. Here's what he said specifically.

Luca Guadagnino:

I have this image in my mind of Helena Markos in solitude in the year 1212 in Scotland or in Spain. Wondering through a village and trying to find a way on how she can manipulate the women of the village. I have this image. I know she was there, I know it was six to seven hundred years before the actual storyline of this film.

I have not been one of the lucky ones to have caught a screening of this new SUSPIRIA yet so I cannot comment on whether or not I want to see more Helena Markos in my life via director Luca Guadagnino. But with all the positive buzz I've been hearing these past few weeks, I'm thinking we'll all be begging for more SUSPIRIA come to the end of the year. Let's hope so!

This new version of Argento's SUSPIRIA follows:

Young American dancer Susie Bannion who arrives in 1970s Berlin to audition for the world-renowned Helena Markos Dance Company, stunning the troupe's famed choreographer, Madame Blanc, with her raw talent. When she vaults to the role of lead dancer, Olga, the previous lead, breaks down and accuses the company's female directors of being witches. As rehearsals intensify for the final performance of the company's signature piece, Susie and Madame Blanc grow strangely close.

The remake is directed by Luca Guadagnino from a script by David Kajganich, based on the film by Dario Argento. Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Jessica Harper, and Chloë Grace Moretz star. SUSPIRIA PART ONE (too soon?) hits theaters via Amazon Studios November 2nd.
