Venom and Goosebumps 2 rule weekend box-office

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

This past weekend we saw the release of Ari Sandel's highly-anticipated kid-horror sequel GOOSEBUMPS: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN. I was looking forward to checking out the new installment in the GOOSEBUMPS series, but were other people? Looks like they were as the film opened in fourth place with a respectable $16.2 million.

Overall, the audience was split 50-50 male to female with 72% of the audience coming in under the age of 25. The film received a "B" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Internationally, the movie debuted with an estimated $3.7 million. The film will open in Italy and the UK next weekend followed by releases in France, Australia, Germany, Russia, and Spain.

Considering that this new film only cost a reported $35 million (as opposed to the original Jack Black-flick's $80 million) GOOSEBUMPS just might have a third entry coming out soon. Fingers crossed.

Elsewhere on the chart, Tom Hardy's VENOM held on to the top spot at the domestic box-office for the second weekend in a row, scoring an estimated $35.7 million. The film dropped just 55% in its second weekend but has already snagged a domestic total of $143 million in just ten days of release. Internationally, Venom remained the #1 film with an estimated $69.7 million for an international total of $235.3 million.

VENOM follows:

Journalist Eddie Brock is trying to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake's experiments, Eddie's body merges with the alien Venom — leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom tries to control the new and dangerous abilities that Eddie finds so intoxicating.

GOOSEBUMPS: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN begins after:

Collecting junk one day, best friends Sonny and Sam meet Slappy, a mischievous talking dummy from an unpublished "Goosebumps" book by R.L. Stine. Hoping to start his own family, Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life — just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save Sonny's mom and foil Slappy's plan.
