Why Englund agreed to return as Freddy in The Goldbergs & episode trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Robert Englund will be reprising the role of horror icon/dream stalker Freddy Krueger in an upcoming episode of the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. The show's creator Adam F. Goldberg recently let us all know just how he got Englund back in the razor glove last week. And today we have word via the man himself, Robert Englund, on just what it was that brought him back to the world of Freddy, what it was like working with Wendi McLendon-Covey, and how he felt about wearing the costume again after so many years.

Robert Englund:

I’ve been very protective of the character for years … I said no to [series creator] Adam [Goldberg]. And then he sent me probably the most beautiful fan letter I ever received, telling me how much “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” meant to him. And then I started thinking about my fans, how it dovetails with the ’80s experience and this sort of retro memory play that “The Goldbergs” is about.

Working with Wendi McLendon-Covey:

It’s Freddy versus the yenta. She has that way of talking. [Englund slips into a judgmental, dismissive tone] “Mister Melty-Face … Mister Knifey-Hands.” It was fun working with Wendi because she’s just so gifted and quick. She’s one of the funniest gals on network TV.

About wearing the costume again after so many years:

Well, I put on weight; I’m a little barrel-chested now … I said, “You guys, I’m old but not old enough that I have to wear Spanx yet!”

Like I said in the previous article, I've seen quite a few episodes of The Goldbergs. My girlfriend's mom has made me watch about a dozen episodes because the little filmmaking kid reminds her of me. How cute. Anyways, how glad are you that Goldberg was able to convince Robert Englund to don the Freddy make-up one more time? Let us know below!

Here's the synopsis:

Despite Beverly’s wishes, Jackie’s parents allow Adam to watch “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and a disagreement between the families ensues. But Beverly dreams of facing off with horror icon Freddy Krueger (guest star Robert Englund), which teaches her an important lesson about her son’s relationship with Jackie. Meanwhile, Erica realizes she’s not as popular as she once was as she starts hanging out at William Penn Academy despite the fact she’s no longer a student there.

Englund's co-stars on the episodes will include Wendi McLendon-Covey as Beverly, Sean Giambrone as Adam, Alexis G. Zall as Jackie, and Hayley Orrantia as Erica. The show is narrated by Patton Oswalt and also features Troy Gentile, George Segal, and Jeff Garlin. Titled Mister Knifey-Hands, the episode will be broadcast on ABC Wednesday, October 24th.
