Marlon Wayans transforms into six family members in the Sextuplets trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer and poster for SEXTUPLETS, a slapstick-style comedy starring SCARY MOVIE and IN LIVING COLOR alum Marlon Wayans. As if he's evoking the spirit of Eddie Murphy, Wayans plays six characters in the film, each with their own distinct personality quirks and body types. We don't see this brand of transformative comedy too frequently these days, as we're more than two decades away from Murphy's THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, and nineteen out from Martin Lawrence's BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE.

SEXTUPLETS centers on Alan (Marlon Wayan), a man embarking on a personal journey to meet his birth mother before the arrival of his first child. When Alan meets his brother, Russell, he discovers that he was born a sextuplet and decides to seek out his four other siblings (all played by Wayans). Together, the two brothers set out on a road trip to track down the rest of the family that they’ve never known, and Alan quickly realizes he may have gotten more than he bargained for.

Directed by Michael Tiddes, SEXTUPLETS is the filmmaker's sixth collaboration with Wayans after helming the HAUNTED HOUSE movies an FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK. Tiddes also helped bring Wayans' NAKED to Netflix last year. Wayans is producing the new family-oriented road trip comedy alongside Rick Alvarez and Nathan Reimann. Wayans also co-wrote the script with Alvarez and Mike Glock. Additionally, Molly Shannon, Glynn Turman, Michael Ian Black, Bresha Webb, and Debbi Morgan all co-star in the film.

From where I'm standing, SEXTUPLETS looks to be entirely on-brand with Wayans' approach to comedy. It's a bit too cringe-worthy for my tastes, though I must admit that I'd chuckled while watching the trailer, but only during the moment when Russel catches a piece of candy in his mouth while piloting an airborne vehicle. You know what, though? It's perfectly okay that this film isn't for me, as I'm sure that there are many who are looking forward to seeing Wayans do his thing. Enjoy!

SEXTUPLETS will premiere on Netflix on August 16.
