‘Tis the season to be Batman. Prime Video has just unveiled the new trailer for the animated family holiday comedy Merry Little Batman. The new Christmas-centric Batman movie sports an abstract animation style and breaks the fourth wall in many instances to make references to the various incarnations of previous Batmans. The movie resembles The Lego Batman Movie with a satirical edge. Luke Wilson provides the voice for The Dark Knight, and Yonas Kibreab portrays the spunky little Damian Wayne, who will take up the mantle, and David Hornsby of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, lends his voice for this movie’s Joker.

The synopsis from Prime Video reads,
“This Christmas, Damian Wayne wants to be a superhero like his dad—the one and only Batman. When Damian is left home alone while Batman takes on Gotham’s worst supervillains on Christmas Eve, he stumbles upon a villainous plot to steal Christmas and leaps at the chance to save the day.”

Merry Little Batman is written by Morgan Evans and Jase Ricci. The animated comedy is directed by Mike Roth. Roth told Entertainment Weekly, “Because it’s a Christmas story, telling it through the eyes of a child seemed apropos. Typically, Damian is a teenager who struggles with good and evil. While this was an interesting idea that was initially explored, we landed on a younger Damian. We decided to turn the clock back on Damian’s petulant nature to a time when he was more innocent and wide-eyed. The idea of a teeny, tiny, little kid in this huge city aspiring to become Batman like his dad was such a fun starting point. It gave us the heart and comedy we were looking for and opened the window to a Gotham City Christmas like we’ve never seen before.”

Additionally, David Hornsby, would talk about what separates him and other interpretations of The Joker, “He is heavily inspired by Bob Fosse’s portrayal of the Snake in the 1974 version of The Little Prince. Our Joker is a perfect foe to a little kid because he is basically like a big, peevish child himself — coaxing, cunning, and apt to rapid and irrational tantrums. His temperament swings from merry to murderous faster than you can say, ‘Holy nightmare, Batman.’”
