A third Star Wars series could hit Disney+ between Episode 9 & the new movie

The STAR WARS series may be taking a much-needed break for a few years after THE RISE OF SKYWALKER hits theaters later this year, but if you think Lucasfilm and Disney are just going to stop creating content then you’re more delusional than someone stranded in the deserts of Jakku. As the Skywalker saga comes to a close this year two new SW shows will be hitting Disney+ and expanding on the mythos of the series, and according to CEO Bob Iger, there will probably be room for a third series to hit the streaming service before the next big screen outing.

Iger was addressing the impending three-year theatrical break during the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit (via /Film) when he started talking about the slate of STAR WARS streaming series – THE MANDALORIAN from Jon Favreau and the show around ROGUE ONE’s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). In the quote, he mentions how there may even be room for a third series while we all wait on pins and sabers for the new movie.

“In the interim, we are producing two live-action Star Wars series for Disney+. One of them is called The Mandalorian, which is being supervised by Jon Favreau, and the other one is a bit of a prequel to Rogue One. My guess is there will probably be one more, at least one more, live-action series that we produce for Disney+, meaning a Star Wars series before we release the next film.”

Those who attended Star Wars Celebration this year got a chance to see some footage from the MANDALORIAN show starring Pedro Pascal and more, with many hailing it as something that will call back to the magic of the original movies. While that show arrives when the streaming service does in November we don’t have much info on the Andor series, other than it will take place before ROGUE ONE (which was itself a prequel). That leaves ideas for a third show, and while there is a bevy of endearing and obscure characters to pull from, anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

In fact, this is hardly a confirmation that a new series is in development. Iger is just so confident in the service and Disney’s unending mountain of cash that they can throw more at Star Wars at the drop of a hat. But, it seems like Iger’s words are an almost certain hypothetical because there’s no way the Star Wars ship is just going to halt for a few years. Maybe we will get an Obi-Wan series after the solo movie failed to come to fruition? Maybe a Jabba the Hut series, or Yoda or Mace Windu or even that weird winged guy with a walrus nose from PHANTOM MENACE. Everyone gets a show!
