Adam Driver has known a key Star Wars secret since before The Force Awakens

Given that THE LAST JEDI took the story in the new Star Wars trilogy in a wildly different, let’s say bold direction, it became very clear there was no specific route the new trilogy was meant to follow from start to finish. That being said, it seems there are still some secret plotlines and details that have remained intact across the movies, as star Adam Driver recently revealed that there’s one juicy, enticing detail he’s known about since the beginning, that has been leading all the way into the next movie.

While speaking with Deadline about the soon-to-be Oscar nominated BLACKKKLANSMAN, Driver was asked about his journey with Star Wars (as the villainous Kylo Ren) coming to end this year with EPISODE IX. Driver compared his experience to that of working on the HBO dramedy GIRLS, saying the difference was that with the show he didn’t know when or how it would end.

With Girls, there wasn’t really an end in sight, so it was fun to develop it as I went and to think about where it was all going. With Star Wars, I had one piece of information of where it was all going, and that’s where it has been in my head for a long time, and things were building towards that.

What this means is anyone’s guess. Perhaps it’s not all that complex, and Driver just means that he always knew where the end was in terms of there only being three movies for him to do. Or, it means he was given a key piece of information about how things would end for his character come the end, and EPISODE IX will bring it all to fruition. That nerd-enticing piece of info could be simple (he dies like this…) to something grander (Rey’s real parents are…), but really, like all things SW, we will just have to wait and see.

Director Rian Johnson seemed to have creative control of where the story went for LAST JEDI, telling Rolling Stone back in 2017, “I wasn't given any directive as to what that had to be. I was never given the information that she [Rey, played by Daisy Ridley] is this or she is that." On that note, it would seem there was no larger blueprint for the trilogy, and everything is just coming to together as they've gone on. However, in that same story, it’s hinted that Johnson and FORCE AWAKENS and EPISODE IX director J.J. Abrams have done more coordinating than has been let on, so who the hell knows what’s going on.

I wouldn't doubt that actors like Driver, Ridley and more were given some sort of clues as to where their characters would end up come the end, just for the sake of developing their characters. But, again, there will be endless speculation until the day the movie comes out in December, so at this point, it's all about hoping things come to a logical and exciting finale no matter what. Who knows, maybe Ren is actually Rey's dad and has some really great skincare professionals keeping him youthful.

STAR WARS EPISODE IX hits theaters December 20.
