The Grudge, reboot

It's been a decade since the last installment of the American iteration of THE GRUDGE series, and like all horror franchises, it's due for a reboot. The upcoming film brings the action to America and stars Andrea Riseborough (MANDY) as a cop who comes across a seemingly-unexplainable case that leads her to a house which, in the words of director Nicolas Pesce, "has been grudged."

A trio of new photos from THE GRUDGE has been released, which feature cast-members Lin Shaye and Demián Bichir along with a helping of blood and ghosts.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Nicolas Pesce said that THE GRUDGE franchise is well-suited to additional films. "The beauty of The Grudge franchise, both the American and Japanese iterations, is it’s an anthology series. Every movie is a different story of different characters having different interactions with this curse," said Pesce. "In today’s age where we’re remaking everything, I thought it would be fun to dive into The Grudge universe where we don’t have to remake anything, but rather a new chapter in this canon." Pesce added that while Andrea Riseborough's character is the main focus, the reboot will also follow two other storylines.

We follow her, as well as two other storylines, that are all interacting with this grudged house in small town America. Like the old films, it’s a tapestry of three different stories that interweave and all take place at slightly different times, centered around this one house that’s at the center of this case that this cop is working on.

In addition to Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, and Lin Shaye, THE GRUDGE also stars John Cho, Betty Gilpin, and Jacki Weaver, and is slated to hit theaters on January 3, 2020.
