There have been rumors that 20th Century Fox might mix one of it's profitable comic franchises (X-MEN) with another that could use the boost (FANTASTIC FOUR) and if the following is any indication, they've found the right man to pull it all together; Bryan Singer. Now directing his 4th X-Men film for Fox (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE), Singer confided that he’s been talking with the people behind the new FANTASTIC FOUR movie about a way to bring the two teams together.

Bryan Singer on an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover film:

Those ideas are in play. That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it. It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say. We’ll have to see how the [upcoming] films turn out. To just say you’re going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that.

I appreciate Singer's reluctance to dive into a crossover film head-first, as a strong FANTASTIC FOUR film should be introduced before we start going all AVENGERS with the comic heroes Fox has at their disposal. While I don't have any ill will towards Josh Trank's upcoming FOUR flick, the trailers don't paint a very unique superhero picture. The box-office performance of that film will undoubtedly weigh heavily on Singer's decision to go forward with his idea for a crossover.

FANTASTIC FOUR will open in theaters on August 7, 2015, while X-MEN: APOCALYPSE opens on May 27, 2016.
