UPDATE: Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey shot several scenes of The Avengers with an iPhone

Oh these kids and their rapidly produced technology. One day they’ll be able to use those dang phones to teleport across the world.

But for now one crazy thing they’re doing is filming big budget films with an iPhone.

Believe it or not, certain scenes from THE AVENGERS were shot with what is assumed to be an iPhone 4 unless they got their hands on a 4S before anyone else did. That would be a great way to con Apple into giving you one early though. “Hey, we’d love to shoot some of THE AVENGERS with an iPhone, so how about you let us try out that new 4S?”

Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey told The Irish Film and Television Network all about it, “The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.”

UPDATE – McGarvey spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and said he was misquoted. “I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie. Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true.”

So I’ve posted the trailer below. Let’s see if we can spot the scenes shot with the iPhone!
