Dead Dude? Jeff Bridges may join Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.

The afterlife just got a little more far out, man.

Jeff Bridges is in talks to join Ryan Reynolds in the comic adaptation R.I.P.D, based on the Dark Horse series from several years back (the property has been kicking around Hollywood for nearly a decade). Zach Galifianakis was previously attached to the mentor/sheriff role, but Bridges seems like a better fit to wear the duster and hunt escaped spirits.

The supernatural action-comedy has RED director Robert Schwentke and producer Neal Moritz (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUSes) bringing the dead to life. Universal is obviously looking for a MEN IN BLACK sort of high-concept genre smash, and this kind of accessible casting is a good way to get it — Reynolds could well be a reliable box office draw if GREEN LANTERN does mega-business, and Bridges can easily shift from Oscar-worthy material to summer crowd-pleasers like IRON MAN.

The comic synopsis: “Welcome to the Rest In Peace Department — the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement “patrolling the deadbeat…reporting to one boss.” Yep — THAT boss. Nick Cruz was murdered by an unknown assailent, at the height of his personal and professional life. Now he’s traded a hundred years of service to the R.I.P.D. in exchange for a shot at finding who killed him. Unfortunately his search will take him to Hell and back — literally!
