Eight writers band together to break the story for Godzilla vs. King Kong

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse has been growing rather quickly. The new franchise got its start with Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA and continues onwards with KONG: SKULL ISLAND, which is now playing in theaters, but the studios have their eyes firmly set on the much-anticipated monster mash which will see Godzilla facing off against King Kong.

As seems to be the trend nowadays, THR reports that a writers room is being set up to break the story of GODZILLA VS. KING KONG which includes a total of eight writers. Seems a little extravagant for a film about two giant monsters beating the crap out of one another, but here we are.

Terry Rossio, best known for co-writing the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films, will be heading up the writers room which also includes Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (STAR TREK BEYOND), Lindsey Beer (THE KINGSKILLER CHRONICLES), Cat Vasko (QUEEN OF THE AIR), T.S. Nowlin (THE MAZE RUNNER), Jack Paglen (TRANSCENDENCE) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5). The eight writers will be figuring out the best way to approach the film as well as breaking down the beats of the story. Once the heavy lifting has been none, a writer will then be chosen to tackle the script.

Before we get to GODZILLA VS. KING KONG, we've got another GODZILLA sequel to look forward to. Michael Dougherty (TRICK R' TREAT) will be helming the film, titled GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, which is set to star Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodlines) and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel). Production is expected to get underway this summer leading up to a release on March 22, 2019. GODZILLA VS. KING KONG is currently looking at a May 29, 2020 release.
