The road to adapting Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series for film has been a long one; writers and directors have come and gone along with the various methods they were going to use to get the franchise off the ground. Earlier in the year Sony and MRC finally reached an agreement to finance and produce THE DARK TOWER with Nikolaj Arcel (THE ROYAL AFFAIR) being courted to direct the film alongside Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner who would write the screenplay.
Deadline now reports that a deal with Nikolaj Arcel has been closed to direct THE DARK TOWER but that Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner will not be continuing their work on the screenplay; instead Nikolaj Arcel will work with Anders Thomas Jensen on a rewrite of the script. THE DARK TOWER is a priority at Sony so the casting of the characters of Roland Deschain and Jake Chambers is expected to get underway as soon as Arcel and Jensen complete their first pass on the script. THE DARK TOWER will be the first in a series of films which also have a companion TV series in the works.
Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series has a great deal of passionate fans who must be very tired of the constant delays THE DARK TOWER film(s) have endured over the years. I'd say that things finally seem to be moving in a positive direction but with this series, until it's actually released to theaters I wouldn't advise holding your breath.
