Samuel L. Jackson talks about the impact Captain Marvel has on Nick Fury

During the end credits sequence of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, when people are turning to ash and blowing away with the wind, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury uses his final moments to call on someone for much-needed help: Captain Marvel. He knows just how much firepower she can bring, and in an interview for EW Jackson talks about how encountering the hero impacted the character’s life for the better.

A few days ago, we saw the first digitally de-aged face of Fury in the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL, which takes place in the ‘90s, years before he broke into Tony Stark’s house to tell him he’s not alone in the hero game. At this point in time, he rides a desk at S.H.I.E.L.D., and Jackson talks about how meeting Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) inspires Fury to start down the road that leads to assembling the Avengers.

“This is a mind-changing, attitude-changing moment for him that leads him to become the person that we know. He [now] understands that there are these other things out there. He understands that they’re not all enemies, and we do need to find allies who have specific kinds of skills that humans don’t have. And trying to convince people above him is a difficult task because they haven’t seen it or experienced it.”

Although Fury probably hasn’t had much contact with Danvers since the events of MARVEL, he still knows she’s more powerful than most of the Avengers he assembled. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige explains why it’s because of this that Fury thinks to call her when he sees the world literally evaporating in front of his very eyes.

“She is more powerful than any character we’ve introduced thus far. So that alone tells you that there’s a reason Nick hit that button at the end [of Infinity War], when he realized that they were up against something far bigger than they had ever been up against before. And having her on your side is hopefully going to change the balance of power in a way that they desperately need.”

As excited as I am to see Larson’s Danvers fly across the screen I’m also psyched to see this different side of Nick Fury. Not only does he have both of his eyes again, but now we can witness a point in his life where he doesn’t know everything that’s going on in the world and can still be surprised by what he encounters. How Jackson plays with that will be fun to watch, and it will be nice to see him wearing an outfit that isn’t all black leather for a change.

CAPTAIN MARVEL arrives March 8, 2019.
