Sense8 and Empire actor Toby Onwumere to join the Matrix 4 cast

The Matrix 4, Toby Onwumere, Lana Wachowski

Whoa! After teaming with Lana Wachowski for her emotionally-charged Netflix drama SENSE8, it's being reported by Deadline that Toby Onwumere will be joining the cast of the Warner Bros./Village Roadshow sequel THE MATRIX 4.

Upon signing onto the highly-anticipated sequel, Onwumere will join Matrix alums Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Niobe) as well as newcomers Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris,  and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is thought to be playing a young version of Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne's enigmatic character from the original trilogy.

Serving as the writers for Wachoski's latest Matrix-related project are Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. In addition to her directorial duties, Wachowski will also produce the sequel with Grant Hill.

Fans of Wachoski's SENSE8 will likely recognize Onwumere as the actor who played Capheus Onyango for the drama's sophomore season as well as the film that later wrapped the series. Onwumere replaced British actor Ami Ameen at the start of Season 2, after Ameen abruptly left the show. Rumors began circulating after Ameen's exit that the actor had left the show after displaying transphobic behavior, but that nasty bit of business was later put to rest by Jamie Clayton, who plays one of the show's greatest characters, Nomi Marks.

Filming for THE MATRIX 4 is expected to begin in 2020.
