When it comes to the upcoming King Kong prequel Skull Island, it’s safe to say that the excitement out there is moderate at best. The films announcement was met with a lot of confusion; you could almost hear the collect “meh” from wherever you were that day. Well, maybe a new title and release date will pick things up again for this interesting project. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Tom Hiddleston, the film will now be called KONG: SKULL ISLAND. It has moved from November 4, 2016 to March 10, 2017 and will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Here’s the new plot description for Kong: Skull Island:

In the spirit of its worldwide blockbuster Godzilla, Legendary Pictures presents a bold new take on the mythos of another iconic beast with KONG: SKULL ISLAND, which stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers and Thor series).  Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla), KONG: SKULL ISLAND will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island.  Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline.  Thomas Tull (Godzilla, The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, upcoming Warcraft) will produce and Alex Garcia (Godzilla) will executive produce.  The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures.

So if you were worried this project would be abandoned, have no fear, a new title and release date suggest things are starting to move forward with this one. Personally I don’t expect that release date to stick considering that the other film opening then is THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT – PART 2 and two weeks later another Legendary project, PACIFIC RIM 2, blasts into theaters. Saying that, going up against Divergent would provide for some counterprograming for the gentlemen that weekend and it might actually help it secure an audience. We will see when KONG: SKULL ISLAND opens March 10, 2017.
