Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart

The return of Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard is definitely something to get excited about, and as the new series has recently kicked off production, it's only fitting that we've finally learned the title of the new series. During CBS' Upfront presentation where they showed off their new slate of shows for CBS and CBS All Access, the title of the upcoming series was revealed to be Star Trek: Picard. Pretty much what we expected it to be, but it's nice that we can stop calling it the untitled Jean-Luc Picard series. Here's the official logo:

As mentioned in the above tweet, Star Trek: Picard will stream on CBS All Access in the United States, on Space and Crave in Canada, and on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 other countries and territories. A short scene was also presented which showed off our first look at Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in well over a decade.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette TV critic Rob Owen added some context to the clip the image is taken from, saying that it finds "a Starfleet officer asking Jean-Luc, "May I have your name, please, sir?" as Picard appears incredulous." Star Trek: Picard will take place after the destruction of the Romulan Empire and find Picard's life having been radically altered by the event. Franchise producer Alex Kurtzman also teased that the series will be a more psychological show. "The mandate was to make it a more psychological show, a character study about this man in his emeritus years. There are so few shows that allow a significantly older protagonist to be the driver… It’ll be very different than ‘Discovery.’ It’ll be slower, more meditative. It speaks to the rainbow of colors we’re playing with in all these different shows," Kurtzman said. "What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings? Hopefully, it’s a reinforcement of [‘Trek’ creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light." In addition to Patrick Stewart, the series also stars Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful), Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace), Santiago Cabrera (Big Little Lies), Michelle Hurd (Daredevil), and Evan Evagora (FANTASY ISLAND).

Star Trek: Picard will debut on CBS All Access late 2019.
