New Tom & Jerry trailer brings the animated icons into the real world

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

After a lifetime of being two of the world's most famous enemies, the new Tom and Jerry are about to take their cat-and-mouse game to the big screen!

Warner Bros. Pictures unleashed a brand-new trailer for TOM & JERRY today, which finds the classic duo taking their forever-feud to a swanky new hotel, where there are plenty of fresh faces to harass and rules of physics and logic to be denied.

Tom & Jerry stars Chloë Grace Moretz (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, The Addams Family), Michael Peña (Cesar Chavez, American Hustle, Ant-Man), Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Colin Jost (How to be Single, Saturday Night Live), and Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians, The Hangover, Transformers: Dark of the Moon).

The film is directed by Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Think Like a Man, Barbershop) and produced by Chris DeFaria (The LEGO Movie 2, Ready Player One, Gravity). Kevin Costello wrote the script, which is based on characters created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

Tom & Jerry, trailer, film, Warner Bros. Pictures, animation

Here's the official synopsis, per Warner Bros. Animation:

One of the most beloved rivalries in history is reignited when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel on the eve of “the wedding of the century,” forcing the event’s desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him, in director Tim Story’s “Tom and Jerry.” The ensuing cat and mouse battle threatens to destroy her career, the wedding, and possibly the hotel itself. But soon, an even bigger problem arises: a diabolically ambitious staffer conspiring against all three of them. An eye-popping blend of classic animation and live-action, Tom and Jerry’s new adventure stakes new ground for the iconic characters and forces them to do the unthinkable… work together to save the day.

While I do find the inclusion of Lizzo's empowerment jam "Juice" to be a bizarre musical choice for today's trailer, I must admit that Tom and Jerry look fantastic in all of their animated glory. Also, how refreshing is it to see classic animated characters in a live-action film as opposed to some fur-covered CGI equivalent? It's almost as if Warners took one look at Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog fiasco and said: "Yeah, let's not make that mistake." Instead, it looks as if we're getting something slick, wild, and incredibly in-line with the Tom & Jerry cartoons of old, just with a bold new look. I think that's pretty cool, and it has me feeling optimistic about this new film.
