Warner Bros. CEO says DC films are “edgier” than Marvel films

It’s the age old question; Marvel vs. DC.  Much like Pepsi vs. Coke, this one has been a topic for debate since the two comic publishers were young. You bring that up to someone on the street and by golly, them's fighting words.

When it comes to the world of superhero films Marvel has been the clear winner…so far. Now that DC has finally got their shit together, they’ll looking to give Marvel a taste of their own medicine with an impressive and lengthy slate of upcoming films. With both companies looking to produce at least two films a year for the foreseeable future, the question has been raised whether the public will still have an appetite for superheroes in the years to come. Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara thinks they will.

“The key thing is that the movies and the television shows and the games, everything looks very different …you have to be able to take advantage of the diversity of these characters.”

He followed that up by comparing DC films to Marvel’s.

“The worlds of DC are very different, they’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies.”

Perhaps he's feeling a little intimidated following today's release of that great AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON trailer.

I’d disagree with his assertion that making something “edgier” somehow makes it more “real” as many folks enjoy the Marvel films because they aren’t “steeped in realism”. They offer an escape and represent the comic stories of their youth come to life. That’s not to say DC’s take is the wrong one, there’s definitely a place for darker and grittier superheroes and I’m glad these two universes will hopefully remain distinct.

Next up for Marvel is AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on May 1, 2015 followed by ANT-MAN on July 17, 2015 with DC's next entry coming in the form of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE on March 25, 2016.

Now, the big question…whose film's are you looking forward to most?
