Zack Snyder talks DCU rules for Justice League, “sidelined” Batman & more

Love it or hate it, Zack Snyder is playing an integral role in setting up DC's Extended Universe. Not only has he brought MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN V SUPERMAN to fruition, but he'll also be helming the JUSTICE LEAGE films. April's issue of WIRED magazine has an interview with director Zack Snyder, in which he talks about some of the controversial things of the DCEU, like killing off Zod, destroying Metropolis and setting up rules for the various heroes. Thanks to the Superman Home Page, you can check out some of the tidbits of that conversation below.

Zack Snyder regarding the destruction of Metropolis and the killing of Zod:

To me, the killing of Zod is not as big a deal as the destruction of Metropolis. It's important that these movies have consequences, that there is collateral damage. In Batman v Superman I wanted to show how Bruce Wayne feels when reduced to a sideline sitter. Batman is frightened by his impotence in the face of that.

On establishing rules for DC's heroes:

We've been strict with our rules. What they can do – Batman, Superman, Flash, Cyborg – we really are hard on ourselves because we want all those things to have a reality, a mythological grounding.

Regarding female representation in the DCEU:

Female empowerment is a thing I've gone after in all my films. They all have strong female representation. It's about time Wonder Woman was represented correctly.

I know that Zack Snyder hasn't exactly won everyone over, but there's no denying that the man has a real passion for bringing comic book stories to film. Even if BVS doesn't turn out as great as everyone hopes it will be, he's helping to lay the tracks for all the other DC films we'll see in the next decade. I don't know about you, but if that Affleck-directed Batman ever comes to fruition, then it'll be worth it!

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.
