Rogue One director Gareth Edwards set to helm new sci-fi film

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director Gareth Edwards has certainly experienced a quick rise to stardom. His 2010 debut MONSTERS was an indie hit at the box office and with critics. Edwards followed that up with 2014's GODZILLA that helped launch a new monster cinematic universe. After that Gareth Edwards was given the keys to the Star Destroyer as Disney pegged him to direct ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. Despite issues behind the scenes that had Tony Gilroy directing a signifcant amount of reshoots, the film was an unqualified success, raking in over $1 billion worldwide. However, it's been over three years since ROGUE ONE hit theaters and since then Edwards has apparently been content to sit back and do…something? In any case that's about to change for the Warwickshire, England native.

Vareity reports that Gareth Edwards has finally settled on his next project. Edwards will team with New Regency on an untitled science fiction film that Edwards will also write. Very little is known about the plot at this time other than it is set to in the near feature and will be based on a original idea from Edwards, not an exisiting IP. This will mark the first time since Edwards has taken on writing duties since MONSTERS. There are currently no actors or actresses attached to the project and no release date has been announced.

New Regency has certainly been on a role lately. The company helped bring about 2019's LITTLE WOMEN, AD ASTRA, and THE LIGHTHOUSE, three of the most well reviewed films of the year. New Regency were also behind 2018's BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY which won Rami Malek the Academy Award for Best Actor. The pair up between Gareth Edwards and New Regency feels like an excellent partnership. Edwards is certainly a talented director and it will be interesting to see what he does next.

So what are your thoughts on this news? Did you like ROGUE ONE? Are you looking forward to a new Gareth Edwards project? Wished he would have gone with a different genre instead of science fiction? Sound off in the comments below!
