Ron Howard developing a Willow TV series for Disney+

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but WILLOW is one of my favourite fantasy films of all-time. Starring Warwick Davis as the titular character, the film finds the young farmer coming across Elora Danan, an infant who is prophesied to bring about the downfall of the evil Queen Bavmorda. Teaming up with the mercenary swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), Willow attempts to keep Elora from the clutches of Bavmorda's legions. There has been talk of a sequel to WILLOW every so often over the decades, and the latest tidbit seems to be the most promising.

While speaking on the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast, director Ron Howard revealed that they're in discussions about developing WILLOW as a Disney+ TV series.

There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy. We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool. Fingers crossed.

Ron Howard stated that the TV series would be a continuation of the film, and not a reboot. The director also confirmed that Warwick Davis would return as well. "Warwick will be in it," Howard said. "Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action." A big-screen sequel to WILLOW always seemed like a remote possibility at best, but a TV series feels like it could actually happen. The added length of a TV show also means that more time could be spent exploring the world which, at the moment, we've only been able to spend two hours in.
