It turns out that those of you who're eagerly anticipating Screen Gems' reboot of THE GRUDGE will have to wait just a bit longer for the Nicholas Pesce-directed film to reach theaters, as it's recently been confirmed that the re-imagined cult classic won't be haunting theaters until January 3, 2019. Originally set for a June 21, 2019 release, Pesce's reboot of Japanese director Takaashi Shimizu's iconic horror film is expected to take the property to new and terrifying heights, so perhaps some more time to prepare is in order?
For those of you who don't recall, Shimizu's JU-ON: THE GRUDGE tells the tale of a mysterious and vengeful spirit that marks and pursues anybody who dares enter the house in which it resides. Back in 2004, Shimizu remade his own film for American audiences, with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER's own Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead role. In Shimizu's stateside version of the story, an American nurse (Geller) living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.
While Pesce has yet to reveal too many details about his version of Shimizu's classic, we do know that the film will star Andrea Risenborough (OBLIVION, MANDY), Betty Gilpin (GLOW, GHOST TOWN), and Jackie Weaver (SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, STOKER), among others.
