Something Is Killing the Children adaptation coming from the creators of Dark

Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are developing an adaptation of the comic book Something Is Killing the Children for Netflix

Last month, the Netflix streaming service announced that they were cancelling the epic mystery horror series 1899 – which came from the minds of Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, creators of the sci-fi thriller series Dark – after just one season. But Friese and bo Odar have an exclusive multiple-year overall deal with Netflix, and they’re not ready to part company just yet. Deadline reports that Friese and bo Odar are now developing a series adaptation of the Boom! Studios comic book Something Is Killing the Children for Netflix.

Created by James Tynion and Werther Dell’Edera, Something Is Killing the Children is one of the most successful original English-language comic series of the last five years. A spin-off series called House of Slaughter has also been a huge hit. Something Is Killing the Children tells the following story: When the children of Archer’s Peak begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless. Most children never return, but the ones that do have terrible stories—impossible stories of terrifying creatures that live in the shadows. Their only hope of finding and eliminating the threat is the arrival of a mysterious stranger, one who believes the children and claims to see what they can see. Her name is Erica Slaughter. She kills monsters.

If the idea of Netflix developing a series based on Something Is Killing the Children sounds familiar to you, that may be because it was announced over a year and a half ago that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan and his Intrepid Pictures producing partner Trevor Macy were working on the project and had even written a script for the pilot episode. According to Deadline, “Netflix decided to go in a different direction” with Something Is Killing the Children than the direction Flanagan and Macy were taking it in. Then Intrepid’s deal with Netflix ended anyway and they went over to Amazon.

Boom! Studios’ Stephen Christy and Ross Richie are executive producing the adaptation being developed by Friese and bo Odar. Tynion and Dell’Edera are co-executive producers.
