Steven Soderbergh sets Panama Papers story as his next film

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Steven Soderbergh’s return to the world of movie making has been incredibly busy, with him putting out two movies in the last eight months – LOGAN LUCKY and UNSANE – the latter of which was shot entirely on his iPhone. There’s no reason to slow down when he’s on this hot streak, and news is he’s already planning to shoot his next movie which will focus on the infamous Panama Papers incident.

The Playlist got the exclusive that Soderbergh’s next film – titled THE LAUNDROMAT – will focus on the scandal that became the largest leak of corporate data in history, seeing over 11.5 million documents being leaked, revealing how big corporations stash their cash. Soderbergh has been attached to the movie since 2016, but this is the first confirmation he will indeed direct. The title refers to the Panamanian law firm that laundered the money for over 200,000 foreign entities, Mossack Fonesca. The movie will be based on the book “Secrecy” by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jake Bernstein, with Scott Z. Burns (CONTAGION) writing the script.

As the report indicates, there is apparently a massive cast waiting to be announced, and that Soderbergh plans to shoot this fall. Given his work on UNSANE there has been talk regarding whether or not he will shoot using an iPhone again, but word is that given the scope and magnitude of the production he will be using RED Cameras for the project.

Though LAUNDROMAT may be the next movie he directs, it won’t be the next movie you see from him. In the same report, details have emerged for another movie Soderbergh is basically done with called HIGH FLYING BIRD starring André Holland, Zazie Beetz, and Kyle MacLachlan. The sports drama with a script by Tarell Alvin McCraney (MOONLIGHT) was shot in February, and by all accounts is already cut together. What have you been up to since February?

Soderbergh has been cranking out work recently, and I couldn’t be more excited. I haven’t gotten to see UNSANE yet, but LOGAN LUCKY was one of my favorite films of 2017, and it was certainly one that should have gotten more attention. THE LAUNDROMAT will probably be great too, and it could be something we see by summer or fall of next year. Who knows how many more films he will have completed by then.
