The Punisher goes to battle again in season 2 trailer

The Punisher Jon Bernthal

While I enjoyed the first season of the Netflix / Marvel series The Punisher, I did have some of the same issues with it that I've had with most of the Netflix / Marvel shows: it was a little too slowly paced for my taste, and too hesitant to go full comic book. Some of that hesitance seems to carry over into the upcoming second season, which has given the scarred villain Billy Russo (Ben Barnes) a very subdued makeup job compared to his comic book counterpart (whose face is so destroyed that he goes by the nickname Jigsaw) and, according to the synopsis, still has the titular character waffling over whether or not he wants to be an ass-kicking vigilante.

Former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham). As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace a life as The Punisher.

Ideally that Punisher mission would have been fully embraced by this point, since we've already watched this version of the character make his way through a season of Daredevil in addition to a full season of his own show… But maybe he'll embrace being The Punisher early on in this new season.

The moments I loved about the first season are the ones that involved bloody violence, and the newly released trailer for season 2 promises that it's also going to have a good amount of that to offer.

The Punisher season 2 will be available for viewing through the Netflix streaming service as of January 18th. Since Netflix has recently cancelled most of the other Marvel shows, it wouldn't be surprising if this also turns out to be the last season of The Punisher.
