While the primary goal of Gun Media's upcoming Friday the 13th: The Game will be, if you're playing as a camp counselor, to survive the wrath of hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees and, if you're playing as Jason, to destroy those pesky counselors, that doesn't mean that running, hiding, stalking, and slashing is all the game has to offer.
Co-creator Wes Keltner has revealed that, in the midst of the mayhem, The Game will also dig deeper into the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise's mythology, and a major way in which it will be doing that is through The Pamela Voorhees Tapes, audio recordings that players will be able to collect during a match and listen to later in the menu system.
These recordings, performed by voiceover actress Jen Burton as Pamela Voorhees, will shed light on Pamela's background: "How she came to Crystal Lake, her relationship with her son Jason and then the events surrounding his loss, and how this triggered a downward spiral in her sanity."
What's especially cool about these audio clips is that they were written by Tom McLoughlin, the writer/director of JASON LIVES: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI. With this announcement, McLoughlin becomes the fifth alum of the film franchise to get involved with the game. The others involved are producer Sean S. Cunningham, who directed the original FRIDAY THE 13TH, composer Harry Manfredini, legendary FX artist Tom Savini, and four-time Jason Voorhees Kane Hodder, who provided the motion capture performance for the video game version of the character.
Friday the 13th: The Game is expected to start shipping out in October and is currently available for pre-order. At this time, The Game will be online multiplayer only, but the developers are hoping to add a single player experience if the game reaches that stretch goal.
