Amazon MGM Studios has dropped the first trailer for Verity, a thriller based on the novel by Colleen Hoover starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett. We’ve seen more than a few movies based on Hoover’s novels over the last year, including It Ends Us Us, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him.
All About Verity
Verity stars Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Harnett) to complete the latest novel from his best-selling author wife, Verity (Hathaway). She’s unable to finish it due to an accident, but as Lowen works on the project, she begins to realize that not everything is as it seems and raises questions regarding Verity’s psychological well-being.
The film also stars Brady Wagner, Asel Swango, and Daniel Echevarria. Michael Showalter (The Idea of You) directs from a script by Nick Antosca (Channel Zero). It will hit theaters on October 2.
Colleen Hoover Movies
Hoover’s novels have been exceptionally popular, and the movies based on her books have been big successes at the box office. The most recent, Reminders of Him, stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers and follows a young woman who has just been released from prison and returns home to reconnect with her young daughter. It was released just last month and has grossed $88 million.
The 2025 romantic drama Regretting You starred Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames and grossed 90.5 million.
And then there’s It Ends with Us, which was an enormous success with $351 million worldwide. Despite that success, the film has been vastly overshadowed by the ongoing legal battle between star Blake Lively and co-star/director Justin Baldoni.
During the production of the film, Lively accused him of sexual harassment. What followed was (and continues to be) a dirty legal battle with each side firing off lawsuits against the other. Baldoni filed a $400 million lawsuit against Lively and Ryan Reynolds, alleging defamation, extortion, and other complaints. It was later dismissed. Lively also alleged that Baldoni was behind the release of many negative stories about her through an army of publicists.
However, a judge recently tossed 10 of the 13 claims in Lively’s lawsuit, which includes her claims of harassment, defamation, and conspiracy. The judge found that Lively was not eligible to pursue a sexual harassment claim under federal law because she worked as an independent contractor. He also determined that a California harassment claim was not valid, since the production was filmed in New Jersey. The judge has allowed three claims—breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting in retaliation—to proceed to a trial.
