Fourteen years after producing THE GRUDGE, a remake of the Japanese film JU-ON, Sam Raimi is producing a reboot of his own remake, with THE EYES OF MY MOTHER's Nicolas Pesce's on board to write and direct a new take on the concept.

Earlier this month, we heard that Andrea Riseborough was Pesce's top choice to star in the film, and now it has been confirmed: Riseborough is the star of the new version of THE GRUDGE.

And she already has a co-star. Along with the confirmation of her casting comes the announcement that Demian Bichir, who recently worked on the THE CONJURING 2 spin-off THE NUN, has also signed on to face off with the supernatural forces of THE GRUDGE.

Riseborough will be playing "a single mother who's also a police detective". Details on Bichir's character have not been revealed.

THE GRUDGE is about a

vengeful supernatural spirit that possesses its victims, claims their souls, then passes its curse to another person in a spreading chain of horror.

Raimi had this to say about the reboot:

We are so excited about this new adaptation. We went back to the original source material to deliver a relentless supernatural thrill ride that explores the horrors of American suburbia."

Raimi is producing the film with Rob Tapert through their company Ghost House. Schuyler Weiss, Roy Lee, Doug Davison, and Good Universe's Nathan Kahane and Erin Westerman serve as executive producers. Romel Adam is overseeing the project for Ghost House, while Brady Fujikawa does the same for Good Universe.

I've never been a fan of the JU-ON or GRUDGE films, so I can't work up too much enthusiasm for this project. I have heard great things about Pesce's THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, though. Maybe once I get around to watching that I'll find a reason to be interested in his GRUDGE reboot.

Pesce's THE GRUDGE is set to begin filming in May.
