DVD BUZZ-SAW #105

ZODIAC – July 24th

The original poster for ZODIAC was bombastic beyond belief, using the simplicity of the Golden Gate Bridge being eaten up by a fog… classic, classic stuff. But the DVD art? Took the coolness factor of the fogged-in Bridge, and combined it with the atrocious ‘floating heads’ marketing gimmick, and BAM! We have one Lame Ass DVD Cover! Shame! Not that it hurts the already awesomeness that is ZODIAC, but come on… this flick deserves better than this!

The Goods:

  • Anamorphic Widescreen
  • Dolby Digital 5.1

    300
    – July 31st

On July 31st, everyone and their 90 year old grandma will be dining in hell, as both killer editions of 300 will be hitting DVD shelves everywhere. Even the single disc edition is pretty phat, though the double disc is arguably cooler art wise. My only question… what, no Unrated Edition? I’m sorry, I hate to be the a-hole here, but over the years I’ve come accustomed to having every movie come out with an unrated version of the film. Yes, most times it’s un-needed, but in this case… I wanna see it all! Guess the deleted scenes on the double disc will have to do.

    The Goods:

    Sing Disc Edition:

  • 2.40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track
  • Audio Commentary with director Zack Snyder, Writer Kurt Johnstad and Director of Photography Larry Fong

    2 Disc Collector’s Edition:

  • All of the Above
  • Deleted Scenes with a director’s intro
  • The 300- Fact or Fiction? Featurette
  • Who Were The Spartans: The Warriors of 300 Featurette
  • Frank Miller Tapes Featurette
  • Webisodes that go behind the scenes on the set of 300

THE CROW: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN – July 24th

Is this bizarre to anyone else? And not just on one level either, but on multiple levels. First, THE CROW TV SHOW??? Who knew? Where the flock was I living when this was on, in my shoe? And then the more obvious, TV GUIDE PRESENTS??? Looks like a cover to the latest TV GUIDE, not the cover of a damn TV on DVD box set! I’m a huge fan of THE CROW, but this… this is just terrible. Anyone out there actually see this show on TV???

    The Goods:

  • Four Disc Set
  • 22 Episodes
  • Audio commentary by star Mark Dacascos and executive producer Bryce Zabel
  • Behind-the-scenes Footage
  • Photo Gallery
  • TV Guide Crossword Puzzles

    SERENITY: COLLECTOR’S EDITION
    – August 21st

I’m a borderline rat bastard for saying this, but I have yet to see a single episode of FIREFLY, and further, have never seen SERENITY. Yes, even after all the hoopla I’ve heard about this beast, I have yet to actually sit down and watch it. I like Nathan Fillion, I like Joss Whedon’s work, I just… dunno, it looks like a cheesy low-budget Sci-Fi flick. And yet all I hear about is how flippin’ awesome this movie is. Judging by all the damn featurettes this Collector’s Edition is rockin’, looks like this movie really is da bomb! And so is this DVD- talk about packing more bang for your buck!

    The Goods:

  • 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1
  • DTS 5.1 Surround
  • audio commentary with Joss Whedon
  • second commentary with Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and Ron Glass
  • Joss Whedon Intro
  • Deleted scenes with director commentary
  • extended scenes
  • outtakes
  • Take A Walk On Serenity Featurette
  • Green Clan featurette
  • We’ll Have A Fruity Oaty Good Time! featurette
  • A Filmmaker’s Journey featurette,
  • Future History: The Story Of Earth That Was featurette
  • Re-lighting The Firefly featurette
  • What’s In A Firefly? Featurette

    PERFECT CREATURE – July 17th

You ever see Snoop-a-Loop’s horror flick BONES, where Snoop plays a ghost of a hustler? Classic stuff right there. And the cover art for PERFECT CREATURE looks almost exactly like the cover art for BONES! I don’t know what that’s saying exactly, but I know it’s not good.

    The Goods:

  • 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1
  • “Making Of” featurette
  • “Designing the Perfect Creature” featurette
  • Trailers

    DVD Covers:

    Honorable Mentions:

    INLAND EMPIRE
–August 14th – Because David Lynch is f*cking out of his mind… and is absolutely brilliant because of it.

PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER
–July 24th – Because you can trick your girlfriend into renting a period piece… except it’s that, plus a horror flick all at the same time. Score!

    CHICAGO MASSACRE: RICHARD SPECK
    – June 5th –
Because it features the Wishmaster and the Candyman, all in one bloody movie!

That’s all for this week! Stay tuned every week for your latest DVD news, and as always, feel free to shoot me an email ([email protected]
