Frankenstein gets a new maker: Paul McGuigan in, Shawn Levy out

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

20th Century Fox has been trying to get their version of FRANKENSTEIN off the ground for over a year. This was the one written by CHRONICLE scribe Max Landis that was slated to be directed by Shawn Levy (REAL STEEL); the project was shut down earlier this year thanks to budget issues, but seemed to get new life only a week later when Levy pledged that he was “ready to rock”. It has been quiet on the FRANK front since, and apparently there’s good reason: Mr. Levy is out.

In his place? LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN helmer Paul McGuigan. Evidently Fox considers the project a priority and is high on McGuigan, who has directed a lot of television lately, including episodes of the BBC’s much-acclaimed “Sherlock.” He also gave us PUSH, but if you’ve already forgotten all about that flick, don’t blame yourself.

It’s looking like CHRONICLE is in fact the model for Fox’s FRANKENSTEIN, with the studio aiming to keep costs down in favor of high concept. Landis’ pitch for the project is said to be a revisionist, sci-fi take on the classic tale, but no further details have been revealed.

We’ll keep you hooked up to FRANKENSTEIN news as it breaks.
