Joe’s Gremlins 3 words

“Hey gang! You’re rolling with Rockin’ Ricky Rialto, the voice of Kingston Falls, USA!” If you’re a die-hard like me, then you definitely recognize this first line of dialogue before the opening credits of GREMLINS. Director Joe Dante’s (right) film will forever be remembered as a holiday horror classic. I also feel that his 1990 sequel, GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH, is worthy of high praise as well. Since then, the following 19 years has begged the question: Why hasn’t there been a GREMLINS 3? Your guess is a good as mine, or even Bloody-D’s who recently posed the question to Mr. Dante on the set of his new horror movie, THE HOLE. The director made it pretty clear that he wouldn’t be the one to shepherd Gizmo through a third outing. Here are his words:

“They made that mistake once. Its a moot point, they won’t be coming to me. I can tell you that for a fact. See LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION and I think that will explain it. That was not a pleasant experience.”

I’m guessing the They he is speaking of refers to Warner Bros (the company behind GREMLINS and LOONEY TUNES). I did catch some of BACK IN ACTION and get what Dante means. At least he still has hope that someone will bring Giz back:

“I find it hard to believe that they won’t make a GREMLINS 3 because they’re remaking ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING. I mean, they’re gonna remake everything.”

So perhaps the next installment of these “furry then fury-filled” critters will be a remake? Honestly, I’d rather just see the story continued. I know for a fact that Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are still around.
