Jon Favreau says Marvel sees Iron Man 3 as a sequel to Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers

While filmmaker Jon Favreau toils away on the upcoming genre mash-up COWBOYS & ALIENS, he’s been allowing press access to the editing room of that film in an effort to raise more proper awareness. While there, though, MTV got a chance to sit down with the director and talk a bit about IRON MAN 3.

Favreau has admitted to not knowing exactly where the third film might go due to the ever-changing nature of the assembly of these films in both production and post, but he does now say that Marvel wants the plot of IRON MAN 3 to hinge on the events that take place in THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and THE AVENGERS.

“Kevin Feige, who’s been involved with Marvel since the X-MEN films, is very aware of his path and how to weave the things. So in theory, IRON MAN 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of THOR, HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and AVENGERS. So that whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”

It’s been known that Marvel is trying to create a single, coherent superhero movie universe, but this is the first we’re hearing about how exactly that goal is going to play out post-AVENGERS. Will IRON MAN 3, however, be able to avoid some of the pitfalls encountered during IRON MAN 2, a decent sequel that had the unenviable task of having to awkwardly introduce elements for the other upcoming Marvel projects?
