First clip from Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium has Matt Damon pleading his case to a robot

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Elysium, Neill Blomkamp‘s follow up to DISTRICT 9 is set to hit theaters in just a few weeks, and today we have the first clip from the film, which pits Matt Damon against a robot, but not in the way you’d expect. After an altercation at a bus stop, Damon’s character, a convicted felon, has to plead his case to a robot, who is in charge of dealing with Damon’s case. It’s a fun little scene and hints at the humor of ELYSIUM, which we all know will certainly have plenty of action and effects to balance it all out.

Take a look:

This just looks like a damn fine sci-fi romp, and I’m feeling much better about the “political” nature of the film after learning more about Blomkamp and his perception on the film via his lengthy interview in Wired (read the highlights here). Basically, there is no agenda to speak of, but rather Blomkamp’s perception of humanity in the future, which don’t prescribe themselves to any political or religious agenda. It’s not that we can’t handle those types of issues, it’s simply when they’re beaten over our heads that it becomes an issue. For ELYSIUM, it looks like we’ll mostly be beaten over the head with awesomeness, and that I can deal with.

ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Talisa Soto, William Fichtner, and Diego Luna suits up on August 9, 2013.
