AMC has podracing glasses for you if you submit yourself to Star Wars: A Phantom Menace again

Jan. 23, 2012by: Alex Riviello

If you plan on seeing STAR WARS: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D when it hits theaters on February 10th, you might want to make your way to an AMC theater. They've got special goodies lined up for suckers- excuse me- fans of the film.

Anyone who buys a ticket from the theater chain opening weekend will received a Hasbro Star Wars Fighter Pod, but there are ten theaters that have special events planned for a whole day of STAR WARS. In these theaters you can expect to see Lego play areas, Darth Maul face-painting, character experiences and demos of the upcoming KINECT STAR WARS game, on top of that Fighter Pog. Perhaps best of all are these podracing glasses, which are of course 3D glasses that you can take home.

These are the theaters doing the whole shebang-

Atlanta: AMC Southlake 24

Boston: AMC Loews Liberty Tree Mall 20

Chicago: AMC South Barrington 30

Denver: AMC Highlands Ranch 24

Los Angeles: AMC Tustin 14 at The District; AMC Ontario Mills 30

New York: AMC Empire 25; AMC Garden State 16

Phoenix: AMC Mesa Grand 24

San Francisco: AMC Emeryville Bay Street 16

I'm fully expecting to do a lot of headshaking after we see how much money this movie makes, even with the benefit of foresight. And to be fair, the trailer does make the movie look far more exciting than it really is, but are people really looking forward to seeing this in theaters agin? Do you expect to take your kids? Sound off below. I'm genuinely curious!

3-D is a moneygrab but...

Edit out all references to Midichlorions and turn Jar Jar into a Buster Keaton-like mime with no lines and The Phantom Menace is a very good Star Wars movie for kids. It has Darth Maul, Qui Gonn, an awesome origin scene for R2-D2, "Duel of the Fates" and yeah, I fucking love the pod-racing. On top of all that, to many it expanded the idea of what the Star Wars saga was beyond just Rebels vs. Empire, Smugglers vs. Bounty Hunters. Of the Prequels, I like Phantom Menace the most, or dislike it the

As someone who was profoundly disappointed by the prequels, there's elements to the prequels that I like. In AOTC I like the idea of it being a noirish mystery as it follows Obi Wan, and the Battle of Geonosis answers the age-old question of if you took a hundred jedi and threw EVERYTHING at them from droids to big guns to monsters and Boba Fett's daddy. And 'Sith' has arguably the best imagery in the entire series, it smartly plays out how the Jedi fall, and lets you know just how manipulative Palpatine really was when he sets the 'Trap' for the Rebels in ROTJ.

hmm

If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Star Wars Episode 1 3D might sound really good to me but I didn't, so it doesn't.

Ok, I have to admit after going back and watching all six films there are parts to the prequals that I love. Still has a lot of stupid crap and misses that badass quality of the originals, aka Han. Although I will not be ponying up my cash to see the first 2 in 3D, ripoff. Fool me once George...

I won't be seeing this, didn't really enjoy it the first time round and am totally over 3D (not that I was ever under it) - but if I had kids I would definitely take them; all the activities they've laid on sound like so much fun, would be an unforgettable day out for the youngsters!

Hate all you want, more for me.

This is really neat. I'm jealous that it won't be happening near me. And I feel really terrible for all Star Wars "fans" that criticize everything now. Hey guys, I miss Han Solo too, but c'mon. Lucas making changes sucks, I agree. But the prequels are the stories he wanted to tell. If you don't like it, then please go back to living in your pre-1999 world(or pre-1997 since most of you bitch about the Special Editions). I think we can all agree that the original cut of "Empire" is the

I like the prequels enough, and own the saga on blu-ray, but I don't feel the need to see this in 3D. In the words of the great Admiral Ackbar: "It's a trap!"

I bought the Saga on Blu-ray so I'll pass. Although...if they did release Attack of the Clones in 3D I wouldn't mind seeing that epic Clone War on Geonosis.

See, I can kinda see taking kids to this movie. It's big, it's loud, it's got fun characters that will keep their attention. They'll definitely enjoy the experience.

But I saw the film opening night when it first came out and was bored to tears. It was even worse on dvd, and I'm not sure how many times they can keep fooling me.

No Thanks.

Not even if they paid me. Unless we're talking six digit numbers.
Oh, and Emeryville is not San Francisco. Just to clarify.

Nah. I'm good.
Why watch Jake Lloyd's cardboard acting in 3D? While I'm thinking about him, is that kid old enough for me to punch in the face yet?

I'm absolutely going

Not as good as the OT, of course, but I'm still looking forward to it. Plus, this will be my son's first big-screen Star Wars. We're both excited.

definitely seeing it on the big screen.

I caught all 3 movies in the original trilogy (was born in '81 so i never saw them in theaters) when the special editions were released back in '97 & even though "Phantom Menace" might be everyone's least liked in the saga, I'm also excited to see a Star Wars movie on the big screen again. I was 18 & graduating high school when TPM came out way back in May '99 but I was never able to see it until Aug/Sept. in a tiny, little rinky-dink theater w/ very bad sound & projection.

*THIS* time I have the opportunity to see it WITH a crowd of fans, a MUCH better presentation (never been a fan of 3D, but c'mon...it's Star Wars!) and, quite honestly, just thinking about watching the supreme bad-ass known as Darth Maul wielding his double-bladed lightsaber on the big screen again makes me feel like my old teenager-movie-lovin' self again! And, just in my opinion, that's just 1 of the many things Star Wars has always done for me. :)

Midnight showing at AMC in Cincinnati for me. No pain or suffering whatsoever. TPM may not be the best of the series but I still enjoyed it.

When I was younger I lived next to a theater that would replay old movies on the big screen. I thought it was so cool-- hopefully kids will appreciate this and eventually learn to love the Star Wars saga, just like generations before.

If I suffered a brain injury and regressed mentally to a 6 year old this would be great news.

To me that picture about sums it up, as my understanding that this movie has a big following from a younger audience. I personally have no desire to cough money up to see this again, but judging from the comments below I'm in the minority

I'm excited to see it again on the big screen. I'm also taking my brother to see it too, who hasn't seen it on the big screen, and my uncle, who took me to see it eleven times in 1999.

Fuck that

I will not make the same mistake again and go see the prequels. Wake me up when the original trilogy is re-released
